Adams’s Road Movies opens the evening with an irresistible mix of rhythmic drive and open, American lyricism. This is followed by a remarkable newcomer: Reich’s iconic Six Pianos in a recently authorised version for solo piano and electronics, in which the layered patterns gain new clarity and intensity. Van Raat then continues with several of Glass’s virtuosic études, music that is at once transparent, hypnotic and surprisingly expressive. The programme concludes with some of the most beautiful arias from Adams’s beloved operas: moments of stillness, tension and emotional depth.
