Three adult children gather with their families in the house of their deceased father. The belongings must be divided and the house is to be sold. As underlying tensions simmer and old feuds resurface, the children make a disturbing discovery among their father’s possessions—one that will change their lives forever. In order to face the future, the Lafayettes will have to confront the ghosts of their past. Otherwise, those demons will continue to haunt them indefinitely.

De erfenis is a family chronicle about a white Western family that suffers the consequences of choices made in the past. To what extent do children bear responsibility for the decisions their—now deceased—parents once made? The play portrays, in a darkly humorous way, the decline of a family, through the perspective of one of the world’s most celebrated Black playwrights, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins.

Toneelgroep Maastricht previously staged the theatre hit Augustus: Oklahoma, directed by Michel Sluysmans. The direction of De erfenis is also in the hands of Sluysmans. It is the first play by Jacobs-Jenkins to be staged in the Netherlands.
