Jaco Benckhuijsen & ADAM Quartet

IJS

Tickets
IJS is a combination of live music and images of icebergs, filmed by Jaco Benckhuijsen from his kayak in the fjords around Greenland. The music is performed live by the ADAM String Quartet and Jaco Benckhuijsen (live electronics and piano) and is reminiscent of the music of Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass and the spatial soundscapes of Radiohead.

For IJS, musician, sea kayaker and writer Jaco Benckhuijsen travelled by kayak through the fjords of Greenland. He paddled among motionless icebergs under the light of the midnight sun, camera rolling, sometimes between banks of mist, in order to capture this frozen world. The live music, performed with string quartet and electronics, adds an extra dimension to this fairy-tale landscape, the mystery of its depths and the immense natural forces of this region.

Before the concert, Jaco — who has often travelled to Greenland — gives a short theatre lecture on the history, nature and contemporary context of this remarkable island, accompanied by numerous photographs.

The ADAM Quartet is a young string quartet that casts new light on the genre with a fresh perspective. Their playing is rooted in tradition, yet breathes a contemporary spirit. In recent years, the quartet has performed at major Dutch venues and festivals, such as the Concertgebouw, TivoliVredenburg and the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam. It has also gained international recognition with performances in the United States, Ireland, Poland and England.
