Oom Wanja
After the success of Een Meeuw and De Kersentuin, Toneelgroep Maastricht brings another Chekhov that resonates. Recognizable, painful, and full of humor.
Director Michel Sluysmans and writer Peer Wittenbols have given Oom Wanja a new look. Jeroen Spitzenberger plays the title role in this tragicomedy full of unfulfilled desires, constraining family ties, and heart-wrenching love sorrow.
Uncle Vanya and his niece Sonja have worked their whole lives on the estate of Sonja's father, who works as a professor in the big city. When the professor returns to the countryside after his retirement, along with his much younger wife Jelena, everything comes to a head. Old wounds are reopened, and new desires emerge. Vanya falls head over heels for Jelena, who, in turn, ignites the passion of the alcoholic village doctor Astrov, who is secretly desired by Sonja. And then the professor announces that he wants to sell the estate …
Oom Wanja is both touching and funny. The characters mourn their past, dream of a future that will never come, and are meanwhile stuck in an unbearable here and now. Each one wants to change their life. They just don't know how. It’s inevitable that you will see yourself in this.
This performance has no interval.
