Pynarello

Pulcinella

Verkoop v.a. 23 May 12:00 uur
Pulcinella turns everything upside down. This bold figure from the Italian theatre tradition is the forefather of Jan Klaassen and is still very much alive. Pulcinella is a jester who holds up a mirror to us. He is an outsider who disrupts order with a wink and gets away with everything. In his foolishness there is wisdom, and in his mockery often a core of truth. Many know his mask, but which face is hidden behind it?

Together with the Netherlands’ best‑known mime performer Jochem Stavenuiter as Pulcinella, Pynarello sets out in its new performance to find the answer. In this programme, movement and music are equals. Unbound by sheet music, all the musicians take part in the choreography while playing their instruments. Pulcinella challenges the ensemble to play more freely and more boldly. Pynarello encourages Pulcinella to finally take off his mask. The jester continuously causes commotion on stage and turns the entire ensemble upside down.

From baroque composers such as Pergolesi, Gallo and Monza to the great Stravinsky: all were inspired by Pulcinella. Their music therefore forms the heart of this performance. Partly in its original form, partly in new arrangements by Pynarello.
