Metropolis
Nearly 100 years ago, film director Fritz Lang created his irresistible masterpiece Metropolis. Now, vocal ensemble Wishful Singing tours theatres across the Netherlands with a modern theatrical version of it. Metropolis is set in 2026 and tells the story of class inequality in the 1920s. While the upper classes grow ever richer, the lower classes are driven to exhaustion to keep monstrous machines running. And what rights do women actually have in this era? How are they treated?
Composer Steven Kamperman has written for Metropolis a blend of haunting vocals and compelling percussion. Human and technological sounds alternate, adding an extra dimension to the production. The conventions of the 1920s are challenged, raising questions. To what extent do the worlds of 1926 and 2026 truly differ from one another?
Kamperman’s musical interpretation of Metropolis allows you to experience Lang’s work in the present day.
