They are coming. Everyone knows that. And that is precisely the problem. The king shuts himself away in his castle and allows himself to be influenced by Fear, which sees danger everywhere. To keep the elephants out, he builds walls and invents rules. Everyone must be the same, speak the same, think the same. To be different is dangerous. Everyone goes along with it. Except Samar.

Samar is not afraid, not of the elephants and certainly not of the king. She does not want to follow rules that no one really understands. She sees Fear too, but does not take it too seriously. While the king becomes increasingly desperate to maintain control, Samar unsettles everything.

Samar en de bange koning is a humorous and moving fairytale about fear and power, about control and imagination, and about what happens when one person decides not to go along.
