A TRIBUTE TO EVERYTHING THAT BREAKS is an anime-inspired performance that unravels a process of rupture. Using the elements of light, dance and visual art, Yoko Haveman deconstructs the non-linear tension between desire, control and collapse.

A TRIBUTE TO EVERYTHING THAT BREAKS unfolds as a psycho-dystopian cinematic landscape. An isolated body navigates the tension between a fragmented persona and the underlying resistance. The performance depicts an ongoing negotiation between control and resistance, drawing on the aesthetics and emotional intensity of neo-noir anime. The work examines the eroticisation of violence whilst simultaneously revealing a subtle, progressive deconstruction.

At the intersection of performance, visual art and dance, Haveman develops a hyper-stylised language that oscillates between control and rupture, through which the work reveals power structures within ‘anime’, as well as the Japanese concepts of ‘Lolicon’ and ‘Hikikomori’. Central to the piece is Haveman’s ongoing artistic exploration of the body as a living archive of memories and transformation. Rather than conforming to the binary archetypes often found in anime – obedience versus monstrosity – A Tribute hybridises this contrast to reveal a complex and self-determined character.
