The duo has worked closely together for many years. Van Poucke is considered one of the most versatile Dutch cellists of her generation. She performs in major European venues and is particularly drawn to the intensity of chamber music. Von Eckardstein won the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2003 and is known for his refined sound, his deeply considered interpretations and his preference for less familiar repertoire.
It is in this line-up that you hear how closely cello and piano can come together. At times the cello sings broadly and humanly, at others the piano lays down a radiant foundation, and at times both instruments push towards the limits of colour and expression. This makes the premiere of Von Eckardstein’s new sonata all the more compelling: a new work to be heard for the first time, at the heart of a programme that connects past and present.
A special highlight of this evening is the world premiere of Von Eckardstein’s new cello sonata. The work explores the boundaries of the dialogue between cello and piano in colour and expressiveness. The composition is a valuable addition to the rich tradition of the chamber music repertoire.
Whether this performance has an interval is not yet known.
